Antique long guns - Allen & Wheelock of Worcester, Massachusetts, drop breech single shot sporting rifle, Civil War era, circa 1862, caliber .40 RF/CF, steel lever trigger guard with lock to prevent the breech from opening, flat steel receiver with loading gate through the top, adjustable rear elevation sight, serial number located behind trigger, unsigned steel tang, American walnut stock with steel crescent moon butt plate with hidden trap door and rear and front sling swivels, 24 inch octagonal barrel which flares down to a round barrel, top barrel flat is marked "ALLEN & WHEELOCK, ALLEN'S PAT SEP.18.1860," s#1804. A fine drop breech rifle made in a very short amount of time during Allen & Wheelock's life, the company was reorganized in 1865 under E. Allen & Company. Rifle measures 42.5 inches in length and weighs approximately 8 pounds; includes soft protective gun case. NOTE: No in-house shipping available. Good action; fine-plus overall cosmetic condition, bright bore with hardly any oxidation, incredibly strong rifling, metal surfaces have aged a pleasing dull gray, small dings and fine scratches are scattered about walnut stock, receiver and barrel as well as light oxide to various steel parts; trigger guard and butt plate show several small dings and scratches as well as light oxide.
